A Birdie Bargain...

Ok, so as many of you know...I absolutely L.O.V.E. to shop in flea markets (much to my hubby's dismay!)
My eyes are always open and ready to jump on a clearance purchase any day of the week and twice on Sundays...ha, well...maybe not Sundays!  Naps are always necessary, I mean a MUST, on Sundays :)
While on our yearly anniversary trip, I talked hubs into doing a little "fleas and tiques" shopping with me...he was overjoyed...REALLY! haha
Nonetheless, I happened upon a collection of barn wood frames for $3 each. While I didn't have a idea in mind, I love the rustic meets contemporary look...it's like marrying the new with the old! So I scooped them up.
Shortly after, I made my way AGAIN to the clearance aisle at Hobby Lobby (hubby L.O.V.E.S. to see this payee in the check book =0) and found this wire piece that obviously belonged on something else, but the something else was no where to be found. Again, it found it's way into my basket and headed home with me...
It's cost: $2.40.
These finds sat in my workshop for a month or so until I was cleaning up one day and an idea "DAWNED" on me...I will introduce these two and they will become great friends.
Step 1:  Tie a burlap bow onto the wire.
Step 2:  Add a hanger to the back of the frame.
Step 3:  Glue the wire onto the front of the frame.
Step 4:  Hang it up for all to enjoy!

BEFORE
It was helpful that I already had the 11x14 red painted canvas on the wall as it has previously helped frame another piece.  So all I had to do was replace the collage with this newly created bargain décor.
AFTER
So, while you are out and about...keep your peepers open to possibilities!
This sweet "old but new" piece of décor was created for $5.40.
Can't wait to see what you find...

A Wise Project

I've been quite busy in the workshop and here is one of my favorite projects of late.  It started with a little trip to Hobby Lobby to visit the 60-90% off aisle.  I found this fun little wooden owl, but as you can SEE...
it had a missing part!

Guess both eyes didn't make it through the Christmas holidays. Yikes!

This sweet little owl was marked down 80% off...

I wasn't quite sure what I was going to do with it, but owls are all the rave these days, so I grabbed her up!
The eyes were an easy fix...I popped the good eye off and then Mod Podge two new ones using scrapbook paper cut out to look similar to the original one.
I also distressed her  a tad.

This project was for a teacher's classroom, so I opted to glue the owl onto a painted canvas
(this one is 18x24 inches in size)
and then used my Cricut to cut the lettering...

So...what happened to the "eye"...well, here you "see" it on another project.  It was turned into a flower for a sweet canvas for a special girlie girl in my life...

Good luck with your "Scratch -n-Dent" purchases.
Be creative...think differently...think fun! :)

O Christmas Tree...

It's only September, but I am beginning to think "Christmas!"  One of my first projects for the holidays is this personalized canvas Christmas tree.  I thought I would show you the step by step process as to how it was created...

Step 1:

Grab a canvas (size is your choosing). I used a 16 x20 because I wanted it big enough to display on the front door if I wanted.  Using green paint, paint quick strokes that curl up slightly on the ends in order to get your tree.

Step 2:

Paint a yellow star on top and a brown tree trunk below...

Step 3:

Outline your frame by brushing short, quick strokes.  Give your tree some fun polka dots too!

Step 4:

Now...the fun part.  It's time to embellish the tree.  Give the tree "highlights" using black and white paint pens. I just drew swooping lines and added a few white dots beside, under or at the end of the lines and used a similar technique on the red polka dots.  Using left over burlap, I also added a few bows for texture and then jazzed it up with the help of rhinestones...hot glued both of those on. Don't forget to outline your tree trunk and the middle of the star on top!

Here is another look...

Step 5:

Also, using a paint pen, write the name of each family member on the tree, spacing the names out nicely.

Step 7:

Using a Cricut machine or even stickers...Spell out "Merry Christmas as the top and the family's name on the bottom under the tree. Then adhere everything using Mod Podge.  This also gives it overall protection and a shiny, finished coat.

This step is optional.  I don't always dress up the edge, but thought it looked like it need it this time.  Using a ribbon, wrap the ribbon around the edge of the canvas, staple gunning in the corners or middle as you go.  This just dresses the edge up a but and looks more finished.  Using the same ribbon, staple gun extra length of ribbon to the top and the canvas can be hung on the front door.

And now...Enjoy your decorated canvas!  Yaye you!

These are fun to make for your own family or to give away as a gift.  The total project cost is less than $10 if you have a good supply of most of the basic craft supplies:  canvases, scrapbook paper, ribbon, paint and Mod Podge.  Good luck...and don't forget to share a pic of your creation so I can see :)

Amazing Grace...

Have you ever heard the definition of "grace"?  That is the topic of the day :) and the latest source of creative inspiration for me.

Written in my Bible is this definition of
"grace"...

1) Getting what you don't deserve
2) Unmerited favor

...either definition is comforting to me! And sadly, I don't spend enough time with an attitude of thanksgiving for the grace that God has bestowed upon me.

So, I wanted to create a reminder for my home...to remind me daily that God's Grace is indeed a gift that I certainly don't deserve!
Want to create one for your home as well?
 Of course you do...
So let's get started on this project..."Amazing Grace" =)
Here is what you need to begin...
The painting technique is similar to the one that I shared on my last post..."Project Tenleigh".
Begin layering on your paint colors...
I used 3 paint colors on this particular canvas...
dark brown, tan and cream craft paint.
Cut two strips of scrapbook paper, tearing off the ends for a distressed look. Lay one over the top of the other in the shape of a cross. Then use letter stamps and an ink  pad to stamp the words. Letter stickers is also an easy way to spell out ...Amazing Grace.
Using my letter stamps and ink, I stamped the words on the cross before I glued the cross onto the canvas...that's because I learned the hard way that it's easier to fix your mistakes or start over BEFORE you Mod Podge anything onto the canvas!
Now, you are ready to glue the cross onto the canvas using the Mod Podge.  Smooth out any wrinkles and then give the canvas another coat of glue.
Don't worry, sweet friends...
Yes, the canvas will look milky white, but it will dry clear.
After drying, you are ready to "embellish" the canvas.  Dig out your collection of buttons...if you don't have one, start one :)
Most of these buttons were my Grandmothers and were passed down to my Mom and then to me.  I also save all of the extra buttons that sometimes come with new clothing.  It seems that at some point, that perfect extra button will be the right one for one of my many projects!  Storing them in these cups inside a basket helps me to grab them quickly.  I must admit that sorting them by color was a bit time consuming, but I can get what I need much quicker now. The labor paid off =)

My smaller buttons are also stored by color in a plastic storage case, which of course is labeled! HA

Use craft glue (or a hot glue gun) to attach your buttons to the canvas.  This is the fun part...there is no rhyme or reason of button placement...just imagine...and play...and then glue them down!
Here is what mine looks like after being embellished...

Here it is again after the embellishments...still wet, but won't take long at all to dry.  Mod Podge is fast drying so you do have to work quickly.
Take a look at the finished product...

Here is the same project but using stickers instead of stamped letters.  I also used darker paint colors, but really like the look of both of these projects.

Here is the step by step process using different colors
and embellishments...

Sorry for the blurry pics... =/
Black base coat...
Brown paint layered on next...
Quick strokes of red layered on...

Then continue to dry brush the colors of paint on until you get the desired look that you are going for...
With a punch of color thrown in...
The color green just makes me a happy girl!!!

Toned down a bit...

Ok...I settled on this look :)
Remember  that the joy of working with paint is that there is no right or wrong...just have some fun creating!
Next, grab those scrapbooking stickers that you have intended to use on your child's scrapbook, but never got around to working on ...
I used medium raised stickers because I wanted the the canvas to have a raised texture.  The choices in stickers are endless...decisions, decisions! :)

If you have a Cricut cutter, that certainly would do the trick as well.  In fact, I normally cut my letters from my Cricut, but I am currently grieving over the fact that it has finally tuckered out.  Look out...a new am improved cutter will soon be hard at work here at
~ No. 9257 ~
...can hardly wait for that day!

Do you recognize what is wrong in this picture???
Yep, I laid out my words wrong.  I kept trying to figure out just why things weren't lining up!?!  So, I pulled off the letters (that's the joy of working with stickers!) and started over.  I pulled the pic from Pinterest that was my original inspiration for this project...
Ahh, of course...it would help if I would pay closer attention to things!

I love the idea of doing this for the home ... but I am simply running out of wall space!

(Also, I don't have a blog or website to direct you to for this picture...sorry! )

So, I will be happy to live with this sweet "Amazing Grace" canvas for now.  It truly does remind me that God has indeed poured out His AMAZING GRACE on me and my family...Thank you, Lord Jesus! =)

May God's AMAZING GRACE inspire you too!

Dawn
